At Paul’s Paws™, I don’t just walk dogs — I help dogs and their owners thrive in the city. Every service is built around my WalkSMART™ method: a structured, real-world framework for calmer, more confident walks.

Why Urban Dogs Need a Different Approach

City life can be overwhelming — even for well-behaved dogs. Between crowded sidewalks, noisy intersections, scooters, patios, and unpredictable triggers, most dogs need more than just basic obedience to feel confident.

That’s where Urban Canine Socialization & Enrichment comes in.

It’s not about “fixing” behavior. It’s about building trust, structure, and calm responses — together — through thoughtful exposure and real-world experience.

Using WalkSMART™ as the foundation of every service at Paul’s Paws. These are not command-based programs — but a practical, humane approach to walking in real life.

Why Socialization and Enrichment Matters

Urban dogs face daily challenges most obedience classes don’t cover — scooters, strangers, sidewalk chaos, patios, loud noises, and unpredictable moments.

Canine Socialization & Enrichment helps dogs develop calm confidence in these real-world situations. Through structured exposure and thoughtful guidance, we strengthen your dog’s ability to adapt, focus, and thrive — without force, fear, or frustration.

Powered by WalkSMART™

WalkSMART™ is my framework for turning chaotic city walks into calmer, more connected experiences.

It’s built on safe, positive, real-world exposure and grounded in LIMA-based methods — always humane, always practical.

With WalkSMART™, you’ll learn how to:

Spot hidden distractions early – notice triggers like scooters, construction, or wildlife before your dog reacts
Navigate high-stress zones with confidence – guide calmly through sidewalks, patios, and intersections
Read dogs and people better – understand canine body language and human cues to choose safer interactions
Build focus and trust – keep your dog connected through reward-based engagement, not tension
Create safer, stress-free walks – stay one step ahead and enjoy city life together

Methodology — Tools and Techniques

I believe in humane, science-backed, low-stress methods that put the dog’s emotional wellbeing first — and help owners feel empowered, not overwhelmed.

  • I follow a LIMA (Least Intrusive, Minimally Aversive) approach — focusing on positive reinforcement, environmental management, and clear communication.
  • My default gear includes: a well-fitted harness, a standard 6' leash, and plenty of rewards (treats, praise, or play) to reinforce good choices.
  • Tools like head halters or other safety equipment may be considered in select cases — but only with full owner transparency, and only when the dog’s safety or the public’s safety requires it.
  • I do not use aversive techniques (e.g., leash pops, yelling, fear-based corrections), and I do not promote the use of prong or e-collars as a default solution.

Recognize That Every Dog, Every Owner, Every Walk Is Unique

I recognize that no two dogs — or humans — are the same. That’s why my approach is:

  • Adaptable: I meet you where you’re at, and tailor sessions to your dog’s needs.
  • Transparent: You’ll always know why I recommend something, and what the alternatives are.
  • Real-world focused: I use your actual routes and challenges — not staged obedience drills.
  • Relationship-first: My goal is to strengthen your bond through trust, understanding, and structure.

Still Unsure? Let's Chat

Not every owner is ready to jump straight into a program — and that’s okay. If you’d like to start smaller, I offer a free 15-minute call where we can talk through your goals, your dog’s needs, and whether socializaion and enirchment is the right fit.

It’s relaxed, no-pressure, and designed to give you clarity before booking your first step.
